Google Discoveries

Posted by K. S. Dearsley on Tuesday, September 1, 2020,
I think I've mentioned before how googling yourself might seem like vanity or procrastination, but that it can throw up some interesting and useful results. In the past, I've discovered that I'd been shortlisted in one competition and actually won another. I've also found a mini-story on someone's website for a hobby related to its theme (origami–'Stone,Scissors, Paper'), and positive reviews of other work.
I'll confess to a little procrastination when I looked last week, but I'm so glad I ...

Dangerous Words

Posted by K. S. Dearsley on Sunday, March 25, 2018,
What are the world's most dangerous books? My vote goes to dictionaries. My reason isn't that they give you the means to express ideas persuasively, to pretend to a background or education you don't possess, or to understand people and ideas that would otherwise remain mysteries. The most dangerous thing about dictionaries is the way they steal your time.
You innocently pick up a dictionary to look up a word that's been on the tip of your tongue, but before you find it, your eye is caught ...

Dull Light, Dull Writing

Posted by K. S. Dearsley on Tuesday, September 26, 2017, In : Inspiration
I've just returned from the rainiest holiday I've ever had. The week I spent in Brighten when I was 10 comes close, but my memory of that is coloured by a child's perspective and my desperate desire to play on the beach.
It would have been nice to see the sea last week without it being screened by rain, but as a writer, being kept indoors shouldn't depress me (you might think). What an opportunity to write without any of the usual distractions! If I can produce a few thousand words with th...

Tomorrow Came Early

Posted by K. S. Dearsley on Friday, May 5, 2017,
They say tomorrow never comes, but they forgot to tell the scientists who have just developed a way to do something in real life that I had as a central discovery in a story I recently finished set in the near future. That'll teach me not to procrastinate! To be fair to myself the length of time it took me to get from the original idea to the finished story was due more to making several false starts than slacking off. After a lot of trial and error, I finally came up with an experiment that ...

Guilty Pleasure

Posted by K. S. Dearsley on Monday, December 5, 2016,
I confess: I like A Town Called Eureka. The series, which is on Pick, is not exactly the most realistic show on television. In fact, the other half says it's ridiculous, and with my critical head on, I'd have to agree. I got into watching it, because it's on straight after Monkey Life. The series about Monkey World Primate Rescue Centre in Dorset seems to be on a loop and I'm currently watching something like the fifth circuit, plus the new series. I'm addicted to the chimpanzees and the capu...

Avoidance Tactics

Posted by K. S. Dearsley on Monday, February 22, 2016, In : Inspiration
There's a story I want to write. I know the plot, I know the main sequence of events and necessary scenes, I know the characters and I have a deadline. I want to write it, really I do. So why do I have this urge to turn on the television? It will only irritate me and I know I won't write if it's on. Perhaps I should make another cup of coffee or check my emails again or do the ironing first, so the knowledge that a pile of crumpled laundry is waiting for me won't put me off. I even started wr...

Don't Fight It

Posted by K. S. Dearsley on Monday, July 28, 2014, In : Inspiration
It's been almost too hot to think. It's hard to plot stories or craft beautiful sentences when you're wilting. Not that I'm complaining. Who knows how long the lovely weather will last? I would encourage everyone to avoid spending all day at their computer, if they can. Slap on the suncreen, don your sunglasses and possibly a hat, and set your chair up in a shady spot outside.
You can write just as well with paper and a pencil. Should the piece you intended to work on become a sluggish tri...

Time-wasters

Posted by K. S. Dearsley on Sunday, June 15, 2014,
Strange how those little jobs that you thought would only take a minute or two have a habit of eating up half your day. Social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, can be a great help to writers as a means of publishing their work and of keeping up with what else is going on in the 'literary' world, but if you aren't careful, you could find that there's no time left for anything else. Coming up with a strategy to keep them within bounds makes sense.
Be clear what it is that you want to ach...

About Me

My writing career began as a freelance feature writer for the local press, businesses and organisations. Now a prize-winning playwright and short story writer, my work has appeared in numerous publications on both sides of the Atlantic. I write as K. S. Dearsley because it saves having to keep repeating my forename, and specialise in fantasy and other speculative genres.
